1935 Triumph 250 ohv Model L2/1


I couldn’t resist buying this 1935 Triumph 250 when I spotted it for sale. The owner had restored it from a box of bits but was now retiring from motorcycling.


This is an ideal lightweight machine for modern-day usability, as the model is sturdily built and reliable, easy to start and ride, and has a wonderful thirties style.


Of course, we all like the looks of the top-of-the-range 500cc or V-Twin 1920’s machines. But if you never ride it because it’s too valuable or because it requires too much tweaking and maintenance, what’s the point? This is a jump-on-and-ride bike and is ideal for regular summer use


…though leather trousers are an advantage with these mid-thirties bikes in case they splatter out a bit of oil when you push them through the gears.


One thing I love about the Sussex countryside is how little it’s changed since before the war. If you ignore a few modern trimmings like road-signs and the occasional parked car (of course, I only mean ignore their modernity), it’s easy to pick cross-country routes that are relatively timeless. That’s where I ride most of the time.


This particular one was restored some years ago; it’s very smart and shiny, with good paintwork. I don’t like concours condtion bikes as they are not practical to use – you’d always be worrying about scratching or scraping your investment; this one is not over-restored. The engine has been totally rebuilt. The only bad thing about it is that it has the wrong petrol-tank, and the exhaust should be fitted lower, but as is increasingly common these days Armours Exhausts supplied a badly-made repro and it had to be adapted to fit.

It starts on the first or second kick and plods along at a steady 40 to 50 mph. It’s easy enough getting used to the hand gear-change. The brakes are good, though obviously ‘good’ in a pre-war sense.


I hope this gives you some sort of idea of what it’s like to own a 72-year-old motorcycle.
